SJ-R Article on Baseball Stadium

I was happy to see this article in the SJ-R today written by Jim Ruppert. I'm glad there is at least some talk outside of the blogging community and backyard barbeques. Ruppert rightly points out the need for a new stadium and the examples of cities similar or even smaller in size that have successfully built one recently. However, my heart sinks when I read the commentors who believe the stadium needs to be next to one of the interstate highways around town. A new stadium needs to be in the heart of the city. A stadium has to have character and relevance which means it needs to be in a place with character and relevance. Otherwise, 10 to 15 years after it is built, people will wonder why the city didn't put it in another place that has more traffic, accessibility and "rich" people. Anyway, you've heard this dissussion before but I was just very happy to see this article. Keep up the dissussion and someone with means will begin to listen.

I thought it was a pretty good article. I do, however, agree with both views on stadium location. Obviously putting it downtown or near downtown would look great and give it more of a hometown feel. On the other hand, all of the land that has recently been cleared for the new Wabash exit would be a very good place. You could even build a Springfield version of "Wrigleyville" around it. It's literally a blank canvas right now. Just my two cents.
