Several folks locally have blogged about the UFO sightings over Texas. But, I just wanted to highlight the redneckiness (?) of the folks in the story. I know Dave touched on this, but I really feel like this needs its own blog post.
Sorrells said he has seen the object several times. He said he watched it through his rifle's telescopic lens and described it as very large and without seams, nuts or bolts.
I don't even care about the UFO. Weird shit happens. It could be secret military operations. It could be drug-runners with highly sophisticated technology. It could be a combination of agricultural toxins poisoning the drinking water and excessive bible-thumping that is causing widespread hallucinations. Hell, it could be a UFO. I don't claim to have it all figured out. What I love most about this story is that when Mr. Sorrels needed a closer look, he didn't think, "Hmmm, I better grab my binoculars." He didn't think, "Oh man, I'll go grab my telescope." Nope, instead, he put down his can of Stag and said, "Darlin', hand me my rifle."

When I was a lad, the church of the Catholic school I attended was having the ceiling and lights replaced. One day, the pastor walked in to find one of the electricians up in the choir loft with a rifle propped up on the railing. Nothing to fear, it turned out, he was using the scope to make sure the new lights would be aligned in a row.
The lesson here, I think, is that we shouldn’t judge people by how they use their firearms. To me, it makes sense to use a rifle scope to survey a UFO, because if it starts shooting laser beams, you can return fire instantly. If you just take the time to think like a Texan, it doesn’t seem that odd.
I think there may be a writing prompt in this lesson: When not intimidating rivals, I like to use my gun to . . .
Dan, great story. I guess I never realized the practicality of a rifle scope. As a general rule, I don't point the shooting end of things at objects unless I intend on shooting them.
Thanks for the writing prompt idea. We're always looking for new material.
Don't really see the problem here. If a scoped rifle is the closest thing to grab for a quick, closer look.
Stop making like he was using his rile to look at his neighbors wife.
