The Avett Brothers Rocked Our Socks Off!

Went to the Avett Brothers show last night at the Hoogland Center. I could have really done without the opening band, Big Fur. No offense local Big Fur fans, but I just couldn't get on board with the prepackaged sounds and the cliched lyrics. As for Chitlins, I can't say. We stepped out after the first band and came back when the Avett Brothers started.

But the Avett Brothers were amazing. Their music is such a well-blended mix of American old-time and punk, folk and pop, humor and honest-to-God interpretations of the crazy world around us. The Avetts are amusing and energetic and as well-blended as their music. The show itself was informal as heck, with the guys tuning constantly between songs, fiddling with fingerpicks, and discussing what to do next. Each song was a wave of good times, with get-out-of-your-seat-and-dance rhythms and a couple of slower, more thoughtful tunes that showed a lighter side of the band.

I would most definitely go see the Avett Brothers again. You wouldn't believe how much music can come out of these three guys.

John, my same sentiments with Big Fur. They just didn't fit the bill. You would have liked Chitlins. Here this sweet girl in a summer dress with a mohawk walks on stage holding an acoustic guitar she belts out a smooth soultry voice. She was impressive.

She was a cross of Regina Spektor meets Rilo Kiley on a bad day.

I tried to win tickets, but Johnny Molson "claimed" I wasn't the eighth caller. After reading your review, I guess I should have gone ahead and bought tickets.

Yeah, that was easily a tie for the best live music show I have ever seen! The Avett Bros put so much heart felt emotion and thought into their music. They have what the majority of bands lack these days. It was very refreshing I have to say. And on a side note, it had to be one of the most eclectic crowds I have ever seen. Teen age punk kinds, middle ages house wives, retired people, hippie chicks...they were all there, and everyone young or old was having a blast. Now I am off to scour youtube for avett brothers videos.
